The Partera chair and stool are part of the Syncretism Collection, born from a process of research and observation into vernacular objects in Mexico. Drawing inspiration from the shape of traditional birthing chairs, Partera represents EWE Studio’s unique interpretation and abstraction of this ancient piece of furniture.
Traditonally, a birthing chair, also known as a birth chair, is designed to help women maintain an upright posture during childbirth, offering balance and support. These chairs have been used worldwide for thousands of years and were introduced to Mexico during the colonial period, becoming a part of traditional birthing and midwife practices in Mesoamerica.
The Partera chair sits low on two base legs. Its dramatic character and expression emerge from a radical volume, with a wide, horizontally extended seat intersected by a long perpendicular backrest.
