CUMULO LIGHTING SCULPTURE – AMBER GLASS

Cumulo is EWE Studio’s first chandelier lighting sculpture, a work that finds inspiration in cloud formations. Like its simile, it integrates glass and metal into a single floating structure, defying its own visual and spatial balance.

SPEC SHEET

The work’s sculptural character permits it to be positioned vertically or horizontally, allowing a 360º view in whichever space it inhabits. The intricate metal structure cages a series of blown glass bubbles with a smart lighting system that create subtle patterns of light.

The glass bubbles are blown within custom metal structures which constrain and inhibit the freedom of the glass. This method is derived from the ‘caged’ or imprisoned glass’ technique, a traditional glassworking method common in the town of Tonalá, Mexico, as well as the work of Felipe Derflingher in Cuernavaca. It involves creating cage-like metal structures which are then encased in a larger bubble of glass. This process inspired lead EWE to create three-dimensional forms through the interweaving of materials, resulting in a unique collection of lamps and lighting sculptures.
