EXHUMA

EWE Studio’s Exhuma explored the legacy of Mesoamerican stone carving, focusing on the cultural and spiritual value of green stones like jadeite, serpentinite, and malachite. Once prized by Aztec and Mayan civilizations, these stones symbolized power and the supernatural but declined in use after Spanish colonization shifted mining to gold and silver.

The exhibition paid tribute to this lost tradition by sourcing blue-green stones for new works, honoring pre-Columbian craftsmanship. Exhuma also offered a glimpse into the stone carving process, showcasing raw materials, tools, and the hands of master stonemasons to unearth and revive this ancestral heritage.
