COPAL SIDE TABLE — JALAPA TRAVERTINE

The EWE Studio Copal side tables are composed by four identical pieces linked together with hidden locks, making the observer feel like three out of the four parts of the table are just touching and hovering in the air.

Our stonemason and wood carvers used obsidiana, Tikal green marble, volcanic stone and wood, while creating the pieces. The artisans understand the nature of the materials, working to bring out their unique characteristics and particular properties.

The table’s hidden elements and the tangential connection of its parts contribute to the piece’s balance and the structural integrity of the whole. Its composition results in a piece that has perfect equilibrium. This construction technique gives the impression that three out of the four parts delicately touch and hover in the air.

Travertine is a soft, porous, calcitic sedimentary rock. It is formed in caves or around thermal springs precipitation of carbonate minerals form solution in ground and surface waters, often at the mouth of a geothermally heated hot springs or in a limestone cave. The difference between travertine and stones such as basalt, granite, marble, and limestone lies in the formation of the rock, its hardness, and its appearance.
