Altar is a project that celebrates the beauty of tools and techniques used in stone craftsmanship. Much like an altar, the collection offers a variety of tables that serve as places for awe, praise, and the treasuring of daily objects in the home.
The inspiration for Altar comes from sacred rituals and traditions in Mexico. We were curious about shrines, altars, and pedestals used in pre-Hispanic ceremonies, especially in offerings to the gods. Our goal was to create our own version of an altar. These objects are not only functional but also hold symbolic and sculptural significance.
We carefully select stones for their aesthetic and sensory qualities, ensuring they meet our standards for character, size, and quality. We respect the unique features of each stone, which determine the final shape and dimensions of each piece, making them one-of-a-kind.
The stone sculpting process involves meticulous and precise drilling. The stones are shaped using a method that requires the piece to be sculpted upside down. We intentionally preserve the marks and trajectories of our tools on the surface, creating a beautiful contrast with the pristine areas of the pieces.
